Amy & Robin Amy & Robinkeyboards and guitars. They’re well worth listening to.” Laurie Thayer, review for Rambles, a cultural arts magazine, www.rambles.net. Who are Amy & Robin? These two kindred spirits hailing originally from Michigan and Oklahoma began both a friendship and musical collaboration in Wichita, Kansas, in 1987. Out of that partnership grew the dynamic singing/songwriting duo known since 1999 as Amy & Robin. Performing throughout the Midwest United States, and as far reaching as Paris, France, and London England’s “12 Bar Club,” the duo has been lauded with critical acclaim:
“amazing blend” “singular sort of sound” “a great combination” “electrifying duo” Amy & Robin have released two CDs, “Little Did I Know” (Jan., 2000) and “Welcome to the Club” (July, 2001), produced in conjunction with Steve Falke at Cornerstone Studios, Wichita, Kansas. Amy & Robin’s live performances add an additional element of chemistry when the two singers seem to sing from the same mind and heart. In front of music professionals in a critical format, their “incredible blend” left the listeners unable to detect the individual voices. High praise coming from those with both perfect pitch and top-notch music credentials. Using primarily acoustic guitar and keyboard, their harmoniously blended voices sometimes seem more instrumental than vocal, adding depth and color not found in many contemporary artists’ works. Or, as one critic put it: “….they combine to build a beautiful chorus of one.” Built on the soulful and intelligent lyrics that come straight from the heart, their performances create a magic that must be experienced. A LITTLE HISTORY…. So many people have played a part in the careers of Amy & Robin we couldn’t begin to name them all. But the actual start came from Amy recording some songs, mostly covers, for her dad’s birthday. She gave Robin a copy of the tape which she played in her car when she was driving around town each day. With Robin’s background (see her bio) she naturally harmonized on all the songs while listening to them. She said “Let’s do this!” to Amy who responded by turning Robin into a vocal version of a flute on their first collaborative arrangement of “Ireland.” Both women were in the midst of a tumultuous time in their personal lives so the songs started pouring out of them. After completing the first eleven songs that now make up their first CD, they invited Robin’s long-time friend and musician, Patrick Jones, over to hear them. He is the one who not only encouraged them to record them, but introduced them to Steve Falke and Cornerstone Studios….and pledged to pay for the first hour of recording time for them. From that pledge, other friends and family joined in to help by having a preview/listening party and adding their pledges. Thus was born the CD “Little Did I Know.” Initially using Robin on the keyboards and Amy on guitar, they now also switch those roles and have added a host of other instruments: banjimer/strumstick, Irish whistle, bongos, the ubiquitous egg shakers and jingle bracelet, wooden spoons….the list will continue to grow. |
